Islamabad, October 9: Pakistan’s hopes of a first win in the Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers were dashed after a 0–0 draw against Afghanistan at Jinnah Stadium. Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances, the home side failed to find the breakthrough.
The turning point came in the second half when Otis Khan missed a golden opportunity from the penalty spot, firing over the bar. Pakistan continued to press but lacked composure in the final third, while Afghanistan stayed compact and disciplined in defence.
Head coach Nolberto Solano’s men showed improved organization and energy, yet familiar problems in finishing and decision-making persisted. The result leaves both Pakistan and Afghanistan with just one point from three matches, keeping their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Analysis: Pakistan controlled the tempo but lacked creativity and mental sharpness at key moments. Afghanistan’s resilience earned them a valuable draw, while Pakistan’s failure to convert pressure into goals once again exposed the gap between promise and performance.
